The Social Policy Institute is a relatively new department at the Washington University at St.Louis. The department rep desired a visual identity that promoted the institute as a progressive, inclusive and forward-thinking branch of a very traditional instititution. Although initially challenging, I was able to pull from the University’s extended color palette to arrive at a unique geometric pattern for the department.
The inclusion of various shapes is a visual representation of diversity and the use of the primary colors, red, yellow and blue evoke balance and equity. Hidden within the pattern is the department’s abbreviation (SPI). This was subsequently applied to a department one-pager and other reports.
